It was my wife, Carrie, who first suggested I work with kids. I thought she was crazy. I was going to get my doctorate in physical therapy and work with adults.
However, by the time I graduated from University of Puget Sound in 2011, I had decided to work part time with adults and part time with little ones.
Four years later I started working full time with children.
At about that time, Carrie and I took in our first foster child. It was emotionally difficult. She was in our home, then placed back in her unsafe home. Later she came back again. Unfortunately we have found this to be typical of foster care.
But, it has also been the most rewarding thing we have done. We have helped several children and families find a better life.
It has also given me better perspective on what is most important for children. And it has given me insights into how to work with children more effectively in my professional life.
In 2018 I opened Therapy Kids to help newborns to preschoolers in Eureka, CA. As my practice grew, I started noticing more and more kids who weren’t far enough behind to qualify for physical therapy, yet could benefit from the techniques I knew.
In an effort to help these kids that were slipping through the cracks, I started sharing videos and public speaking.
Tummy Time to Walking is my latest effort to help parents who could use a little direction for their baby’s movement skills.
